happily ever after?

What if Disney princesses didn't live happily ever after?

Well, our own West Coast Photographer Dina Goldstein decided to re-think their outcomes. "I began to imagine Disney's perfect princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me," she says, "such as illness, addiction and self-image issues." I really love the photographs; I think they turned out beautifully. Genius and heartbreaking.

...and we're baaaaaaack!

Sorry I went MIA for a bit...suddenly got quite busy in little old San Francisco and then my computer decided to crash, which wasn't of much help.  But, do not fear, I'm finally up and running again and back online to share inspirations, findings and creative ideas...

a day for art appreciation

I was talking to my best friend earlier, who resides in Brooklyn, and it made me miss my days in NY when I used to take the China Town bus from Boston down to the city on a regular biweekly basis. Last time I was out there just recently I went to the New Museum for the first time, which is, in fact, the newest museum in the city, and definitely worth a visit. The New Museum is a must-see for several reasons. Among them: the architecture, Ugo Rondinone's rainbow "Hell Yes!" sign (how edgy, how controversial, how... New York), and, of course, the much talked about Younger Than Jesus exhibition (which is great!). I recommend this as a late afternoon museum trip, so that you can hit some of the shows in LES's (that would be Lower East Side for those unfamiliar with acronyms) up-and-coming gallery scene (Subverted Genres at Sue Scott Gallery and Hernan Bas at Lehmann Maupin are personal favorites) before you head to Freeman's to eventually dine (a lovely cozy spot at the end of Freeman alley between the bowery and chrystie). If you have to wait, make it easier with a 'Mexican Firing Squad' cocktail at the bar...the tequila will help you forget about your sore feet...

accidents happen

Have you heard of an australian band called Middle East? i had not, until this morning when my friend emailed me with the information that the very talented band from Townsville in Queensland, have made their song Blood available for free download through itunes. The song is featured in the teaser of a new indie 'dramedy' film, called Accidents Happen, which had its world premiere recently at Tribeca Film Fest and was just shown at the Sydney Film Fest. It’s directed by Andrew Lancaster and stars Geena Davis.

The song is gorgeous, to say the very least. I highly recommend you download it right now because as of today (june 16) is the last day you can get it for free!

Click here to listen to the song on middle east’s myspace site, then go straight to your itunes account to download it.

And a very big congratulations to Andrew for his first feature!

Come party with the Artists!

TONIGHT. THE MEZZANINE: 444 JESSIE STREET.

Chillin' Productions 11th Anniversary Party, featuring about 200 artists from photographers to painters and dj's to designers. I will have a series of photographs up, so come support yours truly!

Also having pieces shown is good friend and artist, Sandra Silvoy.

And, of course, San Franpsycho will be LIVE silk-screening, so bring a shirt!!!

can't wait to see you there!

if you are not in SF, and rather in NY, check out Northside Festival in Williamsburg. Self-described as "Four Days of Music and Art in Brooklyn," the festival is meant to make up for the sorely missed McCarren pool concert shows.

But before you get all nostalgic for a giant concrete hole in the ground, check out the schedule for the Northside Festival-- it's going to be a non-stop party. While you can pay for each event at the door, the $45 passes cover entry fees and get you certain perks like admission to afterparties, 2-for-1 admission to the New Museum, free Heineken Light (wait for it) EVERYDAY from 5-8pm, and discounts to certain bars and restaurants in Williamsburg.

grand piano without the piano?

If you were considering a concerto piano for your home...

Think again! Because Lovegrove & Repucci have designed a lovely piano that is actually an iPod dock / dining room table! The middle console of the table lifts up just like a grand piano and will fill the room with enticing tunes direct from your iPod. As you listen to the music you can have evening cocktails, dance around the piano, or have a full dinner at the piano itself (simply get the silverware form a hidden drawer under the table!). The music will not get in the way of delectable delights set on the table as it will play with or without the soundboard open.

...if only I had a spare $14,000 to spend on this badboy. (comes in black or white)

you can be a wesley

You Can Be A Wesley is a Boston four-piece band (Nick, Saara, Winston and Dan) that went to school at Boston University with me. They are great people and great musicians, and finally on their way to releasing their first full-length album, with an east coast tour to follow. They have a refreshing indie-rock sound, creating music reminiscent of old-school Jefferson Airplane and new-school MGMT with some psychedelic undertone.
Look out for their album : "Heard Like Us" set to officially release July 20th 2009! Who doesn't like the tune of a band that just makes you smile and dance? Their unique sound gives the music a handsome twang that hooks your brain...so, enjoy, my friends...

Visit their website ... And check out their Myspace to hear live streaming music and more information on tour dates.

this is, with the lack of a better word, rad.

Chuck Anderson's potfolio of psychedelic color photography. It's worth a gander...he has clients from Burton to many magazines and music labels...and the list goes on...

I'll dance to that

1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water.

That’s one in six of us.

charity:water is a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Billabong is having their 3rd annual Design for Humanity fashion, music, and art event on June 17th in LA at the Avalon / Bardot club in Hollywood!! The event will begin with an art show and action, showcase a Billabong bikini fashion show, followed by two live bands, and closing the night with a DJ. By attending you are helping raise funds for their cause, as 100% of sales will go to charity:water. As of today, general admission tickets to Billabong’s Design For Humanity event are sold out online. There is one lonely ticket left at ZJ Boarding House in Santa Monica, 5 at Diane’s in Manhattan Beach, 6 at Diane’s in Huntington Beach, and possibly some at Surfside in Costa Mesa…so, if you're in LA, chase down your golden ticket before they are all gone! It's going to be a good time!

lovers' land

This is a video from Riley Blakeway, from a road trip multimedia collaborative mess of a travel imagery project he and some others just completed - documenting surfing in Australia (art, photography, film). It's a super rad idea, and if I could get a crew and budget together to do this, I would be sooo down (so, holler if you are). With their boards and motorcycles ready, horny to ride, they got on the open road, on the 'highway to swell', and after a bit of time in Western Australia, they headed to their true calling - a summer in the East. The open road and the great outdoors...I wish I could breathe it in too - drink that shit down. Blakeway has been documenting the trip with short films, from sharing waves with nomadic hippies and point stalwarts alike, to having bonfires with new friends. They slash, they tube ride, they bask in the afternoon sun. They exhaust themselves in a good way and fall asleep happy. What a life, eh? Word.

pvt

photograph of the pvt shop with a sweet mural they painted.

My friends, Marco Zirov and Antoine Ryan, are the guys responsible for Australia's design and lifestyle label, Pete versus Toby. These lads are legit, and are creating a creative and cultural revolution from their home-base of Bondi Beach, Australia...they are 'a cultural mash-up of psychedelic futuristic hippy lifestyles' with the hope that it will spread worldwide. Pete versus Toby is the battle of finding true meaning, because there is no true meaning in these boys' eyes, for they believe nothing is true and nothings is faux pas. They only believe in "yes": YES IS GOD. There is no time for no...it doesn't exist.

Check them out HERE.

Antoine and Marco

A few words from them on Australian design from an international view:
"Australian design is like our trip to the Olympic games. We do alright, but some other countries take more drugs and have more gold...but I guess we are doing alright for a bunch of convicts who destroyed the oldest cultural civilisation on earth."

I think you are doing more than alright...

float to spin

This is a video by artist and surfer Nicholas Chalmers. The film is a shot of him surfing a surfboard that my Sam Smith shaped and Chalmers painted. Over the top of the clip is a bunch of photo sequences of the making of the board from shaping to glassing to painting. Pretty cool.

lobstah

The other night some friends and I went to our friend Dylan's restaurant, Woodhouse Fish here in wonderful San Francisco. It was delicious as always, but it made me miss the lobster rolls I used to have back in New England...so, if you find yourselves in Maine this summer, here are the best lobster shacks around! Yummmmm.
And if you are in SF, definitely stop into Woodhouse for a New England style meal. Cheers!
